ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to investigate the
experiences of secondary schools that are in the process of implementing Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) in Fako division. The study is limited to
Form Fours of six government general education schools within Fako Division,
South West Region of Cameroon. The study, more specifically sought to provide
answers to the following research questions: What are the factors that hinder
the successful implementation of ICT in secondary schools? What are the
enabling factors? What are the various ways in which teachers and students use ICTs
in their schools? The survey research design was employed and a sample of 350
students and 18 teachers were selected from six schools in Fako Division. A
questionnaire was used to collect data which was analysed using SPSS version
17. The results of the data analysis revealed that factors that hinder the
implementation process include, inadequate number of computers, lack of
reliable internet connectivity, lack of skilled human resources, unreliable
electrical supply, frequent disruption of electricity power, lack of uninterrupted
power supply units (UPS), and inadequate teacher training. The findings also
revealed that the same factors could enable the implementation of ICT if
addressed. It was found that ICT (computer/internet services) are used for
searching for information to improve teaching and learning, sending and
receiving emails, chatting, entertainment, and keeping students’ records. Based
on the findings, recommendations, aimed at strengthening the adoption and
successful implementation of ICT polices, were made.
